Bhutanese Language and Culture School

Teaching Dzongkha, Bhutanese culture and values

Bhutanese Language and Culture School Overview

About Our School Program

Bhutanese Language and Culture School nurtures language, values, and identity through weekly Sunday learning for children and families.

Background

The Bhutanese Language and Culture School (BLCS) was established under the patronage of the Bhutanese Buddhist and Culture Centre (BBCC). The Centre is formally incorporated under the Associations Incorporations Act 1991 in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
With the steady growth of Bhutanese youth community in Canberra, establishing a dedicated space for language and cultural education has become essential. BLCS serves as that vital bridge, connecting younger generations with their roots.

Objectives

The primary mandate of the BBCC is to preserve and promote Bhutanese Buddhist and cultural heritage among the younger generation. Driven by this mandate, BLCS was established with the following core objectives:

  • Introduce Spiritual Values: Connect Bhutanese youth with basic Buddhist spirituality and core values.
  • Build Language Proficiency: Develop strong skills in speaking, reading, and writing Dzongkha.
  • Promote Heritage: Teach, preserve, and promote Bhutanese culture and traditions among the younger generation.
  • Open Community Learning: Provide learning opportunities for any individuals interested in exploring the Buddhism, language, and culture of Bhutan.

Curriculum: What Children Will Learn at BLCS

Our structured programs guide students through three foundational pillars of Bhutanese identity:

  • Learning Dzongkha: Individualised student-based lessons on reading, speaking, and writing Dzomgkha.
  • Driglam Namzha: Lessons on traditional Bhutanese code of etiquette, values, and formal conduct.
  • Nangchoe: An introduction to Buddhist values, mindfulness practice, and cultivating compassion.
